The American Red Cross Lifeline is a personal
response support service that allows medically at-risk individuals of all
ages to continue living safely and independently in their own homes by
providing help at the push of a button - 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
How does it work ? The service is simple to use. The Lifeline
subscriber wears a small waterproof personal help button either around the
neck or wrist. In addition, a Lifeline communicator which is plugged into an
electrical outlet and an existing telephone line is set up in the home.
When help is needed, the subscriber simply presses the button they are
wearing. This transmits a signal to the communicator which then links the
subscriber to the Lifeline call center. The call center is manned 24 hours a
day by trained and certified monitors.
The monitor talks to the subscriber to determine what type of assistance is
required and dispatches a responder to the subscriber's home. The responder
can be a neighbor, a relative who lives close by, or the local emergency
services. The monitor then follows up to ensure that help has arrived.
Who uses it ? Anyone who falls under the "at risk when alone"
umbrella is a good candidate for lifeline including:
