Services Delivered in 2006-2007

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education

When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there.  This year we responded to 26 residential fires, and helped the families who were affected with emergency food, clothing, shelter, and supplies.

Because being prepared can make us safer and, sometimes, minimize injury and destruction, we made 39 disaster education presentations to 2,126 people and reached another 2,168 with preparedness information in other venues.

 Armed Forces Emergency Services

The American Red Cross provides emergency communications between members of our Armed Forces and the families they left behind in the local community.  This year we provided notifications of births, deaths, illnesses or other emergencies 186 times for 152 military families.  We also briefed 68 community-based military members and their families on Red Cross services and how to access them.

 International Services

International Services includes a tracing program to help local families make contact with relatives that was lost due to war, disaster or internal conflict, international disaster relief, and other actions, such as the Measles Initiative in Africa.  This year, we oriented 150 people on Red Cross International Services and opportunities to support them.

 Preparedness, Health and Safety

The goal here is to help people lead healthier, safer lives, and to respond properly to life-threatening emergencies.  This year, 2,162 people were trained in First Aid, CPR/AED.  Another 3,853 received training in aquatics and water safety, including 210 lifeguards.  Twenty young people were certified as babysitters and another 1,251 were trained in CPR, First Aid and/or disaster preparedness in schools.

Blood Services

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood.  During the year, we averaged more than two blood drives per week and processed 5,274 potential blood donors.  We also made 71 blood transfer runs.

Community Services

In FY2007, we provided 4,350 nights of shelter for people in danger of eviction, 10,030 services for hospital patients and staff, and made 3,120 referrals to other community agencies.  We also reached more than 6,000 additional people through other community activities.

Volunteers

We depend on volunteers to deliver our programs and services – board members, instructors, disaster team members, bloodmobile workers, administrators, event organizers, and more.  This year, 265 community volunteers, including 93 youth, contributed 58,733 hours of service to deliver Red Cross programs.
